The previous day was spent walking around the famous Tre Cime (Three peaks) in Dolomites, followed by taking a 30-minute drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo to rest for the night before commencing the hike to Lago Federa.

Bring sufficient water and snacks, especially if you plan to take your time and enjoy the views along the way. There is, however, a cafe at Rifugio Croda da Lago which is right beside the lake; it is possible to recharge there as well but do some research and be sure it will be open if you're not planning to bring any snacks along. A light rain jacket or windbreaker is also advisable, as weather conditions in the Dolomites can change quickly, even in summer. Trekking poles may be helpful for those who prefer extra stability on the ascent and descent. A camera or smartphone is a must to capture the breathtaking scenery you’ll encounter on the hike.

Right across the lake is Rifugio Croda da Lago (2,038 meters), a charming mountain hut where you can stop for a break, enjoy refreshments, or even stay overnight.

This rifugio is a popular resting spot for hikers, offering traditional Italian dishes and cozy accommodations with stunning mountain views. When I was there, a passing storm was headed my way, so I decided to seek shelter in the hut for a break and a quick beer:

After a quick rest and waiting for the rain to pass, it was time to head back. I took the same way back, and arrived back at the carpark after about 2 hours. And that concludes this hike - Some rest is needed before making a drive the next day to Val Gardena, where I will be exploring the famous Seceda Ridgeline.

Closing thoughts

Overall, this hike offers a unique experience of the peace and quiet sides of the Dolomites. The fact that this hike is accessible from Cortina makes it a very worthwhile hike to consider if you are short of time or passing by the town. After all, its short distance makes this hike a suitable one for adventurers of all levels.
