I visited Salamanca Market as part of my 3 day trip in Tasmania - A delightful location that captures the essence of Tasmania’s vibrant culture and community spirit.
When to visit

A crowded Salamanca Market on a Saturday morning
Nestled on Salamanca Place, this bustling market operates every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, drawing locals and tourists alike with its array of stalls and lively atmosphere. Situated in a historic precinct, Salamanca Place is known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture.
The best time to visit Salamanca Market is early in the morning, which not only allows you to beat the crowds but also ensures you get first pick of popular items. The market tends to get busier as the day progresses, with peak hours typically between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. The action goes on until around 3 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore.
Getting there
To get to Salamanca Market, you have several options. If you’re staying in Hobart, the market is easily accessible by walking or cycling. Many accommodations are located within walking distance. Alternatively, you can use public transport, with buses running regularly from various parts of the city. For those driving, there is limited street parking around Salamanca Place, so arriving early is advisable. There are several paid parking lots nearby but these tend to get filled up very quickly. As for us, we drove into town and circled around for 15 minutes before managing to get a parking lot in a paid parking compound along Montpelier Retreat.
At the Market
When visiting Salamanca Market, I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes as the market covers several blocks and involves a fair amount of walking. Also, consider bringing cash, as some stalls may not accept card payments. There are ATM machines available nearby, but it’s always handy to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases.
At Salamanca Market, there’s a variety of international cuisines, including Thai, Italian, and Ethiopian, reflecting Hobart’s multicultural food scene. Some of the delicious local delicacies include gourmet pies, fresh seafood, and artisanal cheeses. For those with a sweet tooth, the market also features stalls selling homemade cakes and pastries, making it hard to resist not to try a little bit of everything.
We stopped by for some breakfast at one of the cafes and treated ourselves to a good cuppa and a big breakfast.
