Cape Tourville Lighthouse is a must-visit attraction within Freycinet National Park - I visited this location as part of my 3 day journey in Tasmania. Perched on the easternmost point of the peninsula, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline and the Tasman Sea. The lighthouse was built in 1971 to replace the nearby obsolete Cape Forestier Lighthouse and is now one of the park's most scenic spots.

Getting There

The Cape Tourville Lighthouse is easily accessible by car from the park's main entrance. It’s a short 20-minute drive from Coles Bay, with well-signposted roads leading to the lighthouse. The car park at Cape Tourville is spacious and offers easy access to the walking trail - The start point was right beside where our car was parked.

The walk to the lighthouse is a super easy 600-meter circuit, suitable for all fitness levels. The track is well-maintained and fully paved, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The walk takes about 20 minutes to complete, but you’ll want to allow extra time to take in the breathtaking views.

What to Expect Along the Trek

The walk offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline, including glimpses of Wineglass Bay, the Hazard Mountains, and the vast expanse of the Tasman Sea. Interpretive signs along the track provide information about the area’s history, geology, and wildlife. The lookout platforms offer spectacular photo opportunities, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light casts a warm glow over the landscape.

The terrain is gentle and consists mainly of a smooth, paved path. The walk is ideal for those looking for a short, easy outing with rewarding views. Benches along the way offer rest stops where you can sit and enjoy the scenery.

At the end of the walk, we were rewarded with a vast view of the endless Tasman sea

This short walk was perfect for a wet-weather plan, so you can probably add this to your list if the weather decides to turn on you the day you plan to hike (Hopefully not!). Otherwise, this is also a perfect walk if you're there with friends or family who have mobility issues since the path is well-paved from start to end.
